Audio recording on location

Popular music?

Due to today's availability of much cheaper sound recording hardware and DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software for Mac and PC it has become more common to make recordings at home or in the rehearsal room. This is certainly the case for pop and rock music, so it is rather rare that someone requests me to do a recording on location of these genres of music.

For live recordings of pop and rock music, this is also rather rare, because the PA companies usually can provide a digital recorder or small DAW to record the live concert. And when the live recording should be at a more professional level, then there are the big OB companies that usually combine a HD video shoot with a perfect live recording

Or classical music?

But for classical music it is a different story, because it is not so obvious to do a good recording of classical music yourself. You will need considerable experience and knowledge of acoustics and of microphone placement to come to a successful conclusion of the recording. In principle, a recording of classical music can be done in a recording studio, whereby the size of the music ensemble or orchestra determines how large the studio should be. At Delta Music Belgium recordings of a quartet or a quintet can be done very well.

But most of the time classical music is not recorded in the studio, but on location. Usually this location is a concert hall, church or other place with good acoustics and where it is sufficiently quiet. For this last reason it is very common to record at night since there are far less disturbing noises as cars or planes to be heard that could ruin the recording

Audio recording on location of classical music

In the past, Delta Music Belgium did many recordings of classical music on location. But since the collapse of the sales numbers of CDs and the disappearance of a lot of record companies much less classical music is being recorded nowadays. Yet I still have the necessary experience to make such recordings, I know where the good recording locations are, how to book them, how to work there and, most important, I know what the likely problems are. I also still have my (long) cabling, exclusive microphones, pre amps, etc... available. And equipment that is not available obviously can be rented for the time required.

I also have the necessary experience + specialized software to do the editing and mastering of the recordings, I know how to resolve any problems in the recordings and how to deal with the specific nature of classical music... and its musicians :-)

Recordings of classical music on location only happen as a total package from recording to delivery of the Master CD
